Introductory CPD module on IPEDs
We would like to draw your attention to the work led by Dr Greg James (GP in Urgent Care in Gwent). Greg and colleagues have developed an introductory CPD module on IPEDS. While the module was developed with General Practitioners in mind, it will be of interest to all practitioners, academics and those who use IPEDs.
The module examines the use of IPEDs including the health effects and the challenges facing those engaged in delivering health care to the population of people who use these drugs. You can access the module here:

Image and performance enhancing drug use in the UK
There are growing health concerns regarding the use of image and performance enhancing drugs (IPEDs), in particular, anabolic androgenic steroids. In response, the National Institute for Health Research awarded a development grant to assess the available intelligence and research gaps to inform intervention evaluation. With support of an active steering group, members of Anabolic Steroid UK Network and special thanks to a dedicated public expert advisory board, this work is now complete. The key finding are presented and discussed in this seminar covering:
- Mapping the influences on harmful IPED use
- Mapping of current interventions targeting image and performance enhancing drug (IPED) use
- What does the academic literature tell us about image and performance enhancing drug (IPED) use in the UK?
- Understanding of the number of men who have recently used anabolic androgenic steroids in the UK
- Engaging with the community: The value of drawing on expert knowledge
Speakers: Prof Jim McVeigh (MMU), Dr Geoff Bates (University of Bath), Dr Ian Boardley (University of Birmingham), Dr Vivian Hope (LJMU) and Prof Rob Ralphs (MMU).
The speakers were joined by members of the project’s “public expert and advisory board” (PEAB) – members of the community with expertise and knowledge of the use of anabolic steroids and associated drugs to discuss findings and the implications for the development of effective services.

Jim was appointed as Professor of Substance Use & Associated Behaviours in the Sociology Department at Manchester Metropolitan University in January 2020. He has published extensively for over 25 years on a wide range of substance use and public health areas. However, his most significant contribution, and the topic of his inaugural professorial lecture is the use of human enhancement drugs, in particular, anabolic androgenic steroids and associated drugs. Once restricted to the elite sporting arena, recent decades have seen AAS diffuse through bodybuilding to the gym culture and an increasingly image conscious general population to become recognised as an emerging public health concern. Jim will draw on his work as a harm reduction nurse through to his current research portfolio, collaborating with many of the world’s leading academics in the field, including aspects of epidemiology, public health, public policy, criminology and health care.
